The culture of the wine existed well before the Roman period. At present, the 420 hectares of vineyard in Sion makes it the second biggest wine community in the Valais. The soils of Sion offers a multitude of different wines which are cultivated in terraces supported by dry stone walls sometimes more than centuries old.
The city of Sion should soon have four classified Grand Crus (the Fendant, the Ermitage, the Dôle and the Syrah) and the Petite Arvine, the star of the local cellars.
